Israeli airstrikes killed at least eight people in Gaza City early Thursday, civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP.

Seven were killed in strikes on residential buildings and one in the Al-Shati refugee camp to the west of the city. Al-Shifa Hospital reported 15 people wounded.

Who did the Israeli strikes in Gaza kill?

The dead included people struck in several residential areas across Gaza City. Seven were killed when warplanes hit apartment buildings, while a separate strike near the Al-Qouqa Roundabout in the Al-Shati refugee camp killed one more.

Rescue crews were searching rubble for survivors, Bassal said.

What is the state of the Gaza ceasefire?

Despite a truce technically in effect since October, daily violence has continued across the Gaza Strip. Israel now controls over half the territory, in defiance of the ceasefire's terms. Both Hamas and Israel accuse each other of violating the agreement.

Gaza's health ministry, whose figures the UN considers reliable, says Israel has killed at least 936 people since the ceasefire began. The ministry operates under Hamas authority but applies consistent, internationally recognized methodology for tracking casualties.

Why have ceasefire negotiations stalled?

The first phase of the truce included the release of the last Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel. A second phase, meant to involve Hamas's disarmament and a gradual Israeli military withdrawal, has been deadlocked for months.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the military to take control of 70 percent of the Gaza Strip. Also last week, Israeli forces killed Mohammed Odeh, the latest head of Hamas's armed wing in Gaza, a month after his predecessor was killed in a similar strike.
